COOs: Innovative, Adaptable Leadership Needed for Future

If there is a single message that I took away from the COO meeting last week, it is the following:

Kassandra Jensen
Past experience is no guarantee for future success!
The health care environment is wrought with uncertainties and is changing at lightning speed. To compete in the new world, hospital executives must throw away leadership models of the past. It is no longer adequate to identify a single target, aim and fire. Children’s hospital leadership must continue on the path of creating true learning organizations. Organizations that are innovative, adaptable and prepared for many future possibilities.
The health care landscape is ripe with uncertainty. We are already operating in an environment of shifting payor mix, restrained access to capital, reimbursement pressures and declining income. As we stand in the midst of new health care reform legislation…what will the reimbursement model of the future look like? How does pediatric market consolidation impact free-standing children’s hospitals? Is there more regionalization care? How do children’s hospitals increase operational flexibility and allocate scarce resources?
All great questions that can’t be answered with great certainty. Are children’s hospital executives ready, prepared and able to meet this new challenge?
